The Rotterdam Filmfestival is about halfways on the moment, and today I had an early shift (again) with the screening of Paradise Girls. I didn’t see though, because I was late (first time, but still shame on me). Luckily there were other volunteers to take the first part of my shift. Too bad I didn’t see Paradise Girls by Fow Pyng Hu, the director of Jacky (2000). The second movie today was Hawaii, Oslo. A nice movie, in style comparable with Magnolia (1999). Hawaii, Oslo (2004) by Erik Poppe has five storylines which are all interonnected. The movie starts with an ambulance which hits a running man, who dies. After that it turns out to be a bad dream, or wasn’t it a bad dream afterall? If you like the speed and ritme of Magnolia you will probably also enjoy Hawaii, Oslo. Other movies seen the last days: The Mad Fox: A oldtimer from Japan. It didn’t live up to my expectations. The movie ended where I thought the end sequence of the story would start. Sunday 30th january:
- Le Chiavi di casa: Nice, but a bit to melodramatic and predictable for me.
- My Summer of Love: Two girls (one upperclass and one workingclass) spend the summer together. Good movie.
- A Fugitive from the past: old Japanese detective story from Uchida Tomu. Always good.
- The Adventure of Iron Pussy: hilarious movie about Iron Pussy, a Tai version of James Bond. The movie looks cheap in every shot, but that was the purpus of the director. If you like the old trash Kung-Fu movies and sort, go see it, otherwise don’t.
Monday 31 january
- Ningun Lugar en ninguna parte: Music, images, nothing. Not my cup of thee, I left after 20 minutes.
- A Time Far Past: Not boring, but the movie was way to slow. With missed oppurtunities in the camerawork. I left after about an hour.
- While Darwin Sleeps: hallucinating short about insects. It sound boring, but it wasn’t!
- Late Bloomer: Wheelchairman gets mad after his friend takes over the girl he considers to be his own girlfriend. Some wonderfull shots, but that couldn’t save the movie. I’ve seen some weird Japanese movies, but this one was definitely not my cup of thee. I left after about half an hour.Seems it wasn’t my day for movies…
- A Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji: My daily taste of Uchida Tomu. Wonderfull movie, in which you can see why old samurai movies inspired Hollywood to make westerns.
- Ronda nocurna: Nice movie about the nightlife in Buenos Aires, with a touch of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in it.
- Absolut: A thriller with a good plot, but at the end… it all falls to peaces… Too bad.
